Brain Cell Growth Linked to Depression, Study Finds

A study published in Nature Medicine has found that the growth of new brain cells in a key memory region appears to be disrupted in people with major depression.

The journal Nature Medicine has posted research examining what happens to new nerve cell growth (neurogenesis) in the hippocampus — a small, curved structure deep in the brain involved in memory and mood regulation — in people diagnosed with major depressive disorder. The findings suggest this process is dysregulated, meaning it doesn’t function as it should, in those living with the condition.

The hippocampus has long been of interest to depression researchers. It’s one of the few areas of the adult brain where new cells continue to form throughout life, and earlier research has pointed to links between that process and how people respond to antidepressant treatment.

The Nature Medicine post did not include further detail in the tweet itself about sample size, methodology, or specific findings beyond the headline result.
