Vehicular access to businesses around Folkestone Harbour is being reopened after road closures linked to the fire at the Grand Burstin Hotel disrupted traders and residents for nearly a week.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council announced on 24 September 2026 that access for vehicles to all local businesses in Folkestone Harbour was being restored — news the council described as welcome after what it called a tough week for the area. Businesses along Harbour Approach Road and the surrounding harbour streets had been cut off from deliveries, customer drop-offs and staff travel while emergency services worked at the scene of the Grand Burstin Hotel fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that road closures had been necessary while emergency operations continued near the fire-damaged hotel. The council said some residents living close to the Grand Burstin had been relocated for safety reasons — and those residents may still be affected by ongoing disruption even as access for traders begins to return.

The restoration is good news for harbour businesses. Shops, cafés and other commercial premises on and around the Harbour Arm depend on vehicle access for stock deliveries, collections and customers who cannot easily reach the waterfront on foot or by public transport.

But questions remain. The council has not confirmed whether the reopening is permanent, phased or still subject to emergency restrictions that could change at short notice. No specific roads or timings have been named. That uncertainty could leave traders and visitors unsure of what to expect, particularly if emergency work near the hotel continues to affect traffic management in the area.
