Google Open-Sources Nearly 4,000 Noto 3D Emoji Models for Developers and Creators Worldwide

Google has released its entire redesigned Noto Emoji library as downloadable 3D model files, covering 3,977 characters available free to developers, designers and anyone building apps, games or VR experiences.

Picture a tiny yellow face, not flat and cartoonish as it’s appeared on your phone screen for years, but rounded, physically present, lit from one side with a soft shadow curving beneath it. That’s the idea behind Google’s Noto 3D Emoji — and as of World Emoji Day 2026, Google has made the raw files for all 3,977 of them free to download and use.

The announcement, timed to coincide with the annual celebration of all things emoji, marks a meaningful step beyond what Google had previously offered. The Noto Emoji project has long supplied open-source emoji imagery — colour fonts, SVGs, PNGs — to Android devices, Gmail, Google Meet and ChromeOS. But this time Google is releasing the underlying .OBJ 3D model files themselves, meaning anyone can pull the assets into Blender, Unity or Unreal Engine and do something genuinely new with them.

From Flat Icons to Full Objects

The shift from 2D to 3D isn’t just cosmetic. Google’s design team has published detailed accounts of the decisions behind the redesign — including something as specific as whether a face should behave geometrically like a sphere or a flat disc. The answer, it turns out, affects how expressive and readable the emoji feels at small sizes.

Animals presented a different challenge. User research carried out by Google found that showing full-body animals, rather than just a head, actually improves recognition. Props, though, can do the opposite — too many accessories around a character and comprehension drops. So the team stripped things back where the data told them to.

Google also developed an AI-assisted contrast checker specifically for the project, designed to ensure emoji featuring darker skin tones remain clearly visible against dark-mode interfaces. It’s a detail that might sound minor but matters enormously for the millions of users who keep their phones on dark mode by default.

What Developers Can Actually Do With It

The practical uses are broad. Google has said the 3D emoji assets are designed for building immersive VR worlds, indie apps, animations and memes — and because the files are .OBJ format, they slot directly into the most widely used creative tools.

For smaller studios and independent developers, that’s genuinely useful. Commissioning bespoke 3D emoji characters from scratch is expensive and time-consuming. Having nearly 4,000 professionally designed, consistently styled models available at no cost changes the maths on a lot of small projects.

That said, some commentators have raised questions about what this means for design diversity across platforms. When a single company’s visual language is baked into thousands of apps and experiences — even through open-source licensing — it can push everything towards a certain aesthetic. Others have pointed out that open-sourcing assets doesn’t necessarily mean open governance: Google still controls the direction of the Noto set.

The Rollout: Pixel First, Android Later

The new 3D designs won’t appear on every Android phone at once. Google has confirmed the Noto 3D emoji set will debut on Pixel devices first, as part of the Android 17 rollout, before reaching other Android phones in a later update.

That staggered approach is typical of how Google handles major design changes — Pixel hardware has long served as the first test bed before changes propagate across the broader Android ecosystem.

Niharika Hariharan, a senior designer on the Noto Emoji project, said: “We wanted emoji to feel like they have physicality — like they exist in a real space rather than sitting flat on a screen.”

Short version: your current Android phone will get the new look eventually. Just not necessarily straight away.

Open Source, But Not Without Caveats

The existing Noto Emoji fonts and 2D assets are licensed under the SIL Open Font Licence 1.1, and Google has described the new 3D model files as part of the same open-source portfolio. So the licensing terms should be familiar to anyone who’s already worked with Noto assets.

But it’s worth being clear about what “open source” means here in practice. You can download, edit and redistribute the models. You can use them commercially. What you can’t do is claim them as your own original work or strip out attribution. For most developers and creators, those terms are perfectly workable.
