The UK government has put plans to reorganise local government in Kent and Medway on hold pending a review, with Kent County Council saying it remains fully focused on day-to-day services while it seeks answers from ministers.
Residents across Kent and Medway will see no immediate changes to how their local councils are run. The government has paused its reorganisation plans for the area — and for now, that’s that. Kent County Council confirmed the restructuring, which would have altered how the county’s councils are structured and governed, is on ice while a review takes place.
KCC Leader Linden Kemkaran released a video message in response and has written formally to The Right Honourable Angela Rayner MP requesting a fuller explanation of the reasoning behind the government’s July 2026 decision. The council is seeking clarity on a number of issues following the announcement.
Services — education, social care, highways, the lot — will carry on as normal. KCC’s statement was unambiguous: the council remains “100% focused on delivering the best possible services for those who live, work and study in the county.” Staff were also singled out, with supporting the workforce flagged as a priority.
Council leaders across the county will be seeking further clarity from the government on a number of issues as the review proceeds.
Elsewhere at County Hall, a consultation on the draft Kent Minerals Sites Plan opened on 30 July 2026, the council’s DOLGE strategy launched the same day, and a separate initiative around AI confidence was published on 28 August 2026.
