Kunihiro Hattori, Tomoyuki Igawa, and Takehisa Kitazawa have received the 2026 Lasker–DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for developing a preventive treatment for haemophilia A.
Three Japanese researchers have been awarded one of medicine’s most prestigious prizes for their work on haemophilia A (a hereditary bleeding disorder in which the blood cannot clot properly), the New England Journal of Medicine announced. Kunihiro Hattori, Tomoyuki Igawa, and Takehisa Kitazawa received the 2026 Lasker–DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award in recognition of a prophylactic therapy — a treatment designed to prevent bleeding before it occurs, rather than stopping it after the fact.
The Lasker–DeBakey award is among the most recognised honours in clinical medicine, and recipients have historically gone on to receive Nobel Prizes. The three scientists’ work centres on a new approach to managing haemophilia A, which affects the body’s ability to produce a clotting protein known as factor VIII. Standard treatments have long involved replacing that missing protein, but the therapy developed by Hattori, Igawa, and Kitazawa works differently — it targets the clotting process through an alternative biological pathway.
The New England Journal of Medicine published a Clinical Implications of Basic Research article alongside the announcement, detailing how the scientists’ laboratory discoveries translated into a treatment with real-world patient benefit.
People with haemophilia A experience prolonged or spontaneous bleeding, which without treatment can cause serious joint damage and, in severe cases, life-threatening complications. A preventive therapy — rather than one given only during a bleeding episode — can much change day-to-day life for those living with the condition.
