The New England Journal of Medicine has published findings from the DAPT-MVD trial, examining how long patients with blockages in multiple heart arteries should stay on dual blood-thinning medication after a stent procedure.
The trial — known as DAPT-MVD — looks at extended dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), a treatment where patients take two blood-thinning medicines together to stop clots forming after a stent is fitted. The New England Journal of Medicine, one of the world’s most widely read medical journals, published both the trial results and an accompanying editorial weighing the benefits against the bleeding risks that come with keeping patients on this combination longer term.
The research focuses specifically on people with multivessel coronary artery disease — that is, significant narrowing or blockage in more than one of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. How long to continue dual blood-thinning treatment in this group has been an open question in cardiology, and the trial was designed to provide clearer guidance for clinicians.
The journal also published an editorial titled Balancing the Scales — Extended DAPT in Coronary Artery Disease, which sets out the clinical trade-offs involved. Staying on two blood thinners for longer may reduce the risk of heart attack or further clotting events, but it also raises the risk of serious bleeding — a tension that cardiologists routinely face when managing patients after stent procedures.
Kent residents who have had a stent fitted or who are taking antiplatelet medicines should not change their medication without speaking to their GP or heart specialist first. Any concerns about chest pain, unusual bruising, or bleeding should be raised with a clinician promptly.
Key information
- Do not stop or change antiplatelet medication without medical advice — speak to your GP or cardiology team first
- For urgent health concerns, call NHS 111 or, in an emergency, 999
- Your GP surgery or NHS Kent and Medway can advise on heart medication reviews
