The Office for National Statistics has refreshed its real-time indicators dashboard, which gives a weekly snapshot of UK economic activity and social change using experimental data methods.
The ONS posted on social media this week to announce the update to its Economic Activity and Social Change real-time indicator dashboard — a weekly release that tracks short-term movements across the UK economy and society. The figures show the series draws on rapid response surveys, novel data sources and experimental methods, and ONS classifies it as official statistics in development, meaning outputs may be revised as methods are refined.
Because the series is classed as early experimental data and analysis rather than finished statistics, it sits alongside — not in place of — ONS’s established GDP, labour market and inflation releases. Publication dates of 8 May 2026 and 9 July 2026 confirm the dashboard runs on a near-weekly cycle.
That frequency is the point. Standard economic statistics arrive monthly or quarterly, often weeks after the period they cover. This dashboard is designed to give faster signals.
For Kent, the practical value lies in how local bodies are likely to use it. Kent County Council, district councils, local business groups and voluntary organisations monitoring demand and cost pressures may draw on the dashboard to judge short-term shifts in employment, retail spending, commuting patterns and household finances across the county. Whether national trends in those areas are strengthening or weakening could feed into decisions about service planning and business investment.
But the experimental label matters. Economists and analysts who use the dashboard will recognise that indicators built on novel methods can be noisier than established statistics — useful for early signals, less reliable as a definitive measure. ONS is transparent about this, describing the series as still being developed rather than a settled product.
