Southern Water holding public meeting in Elham over recent works
Residents in Elham can put questions directly to Southern Water at a community event on 4 September at the village hall.
Villagers in Elham have until Friday evening to sign up for a face-to-face meeting with Southern Water — a chance to raise concerns about the recent works carried out in the area. The event runs from 17:30 to 19:30 at Elham Village Hall, in the Folkestone & Hythe district.
The meeting was flagged by local figure @sojanuk on social media, who described it as “an opportunity to raise concerns or questions directly with Southern Water about the recent works.” You’ll need to register in advance via the link in the original post.
Southern Water has earmarked £7.5 million for sewer sealing in Elham, Lyminge and Peene. That sits within a wider £42 million programme across Kent targeting sewage spills, storm overflows and pollution incidents — itself part of a £276 million spend across Kent over four years. The company is also replacing around 32 km of water mains across the county to cut the risk of supply interruptions.
Campaigners have argued that figures of this scale are welcome but that whether residents feel the benefit on the ground remains to be seen.
Works of this kind can bring temporary disruption including road closures, traffic management and noise. Residents may also have longer-term questions about flooding risk, sewage odour and what the changes actually mean for their street. Friday’s event is the place to ask.
Environmental groups and campaigners have long argued that investment by water companies hasn’t kept pace with the scale of pollution problems. Both Ofwat and the Environment Agency expect water companies to reduce storm overflows and engage openly with local communities about their work.
