Teenager dies and 16-year-old critically injured after moped collision in Sheerness

An 18-year-old man died and a 16-year-old boy was left in a critical condition after a moped collision near Sheppey Leisure Centre in Sheerness on the evening of 31 October 2026.

Kent Police reported that officers on foot patrol approached a moped rider at about 7.50pm near Beach Street and Sheppey Leisure Centre. The moped left via an alleyway beside the leisure centre and was subsequently involved in a collision. Officers provided first aid at the scene.

The 18-year-old man, from Sheppey, was believed to have been riding the moped. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old boy, also from Sheppey, had been travelling as a passenger and was taken to a London hospital in a critical condition.

Because officers were present immediately before the collision, a mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. That referral relates to the police contact preceding the collision and is separate from the criminal investigation. Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances of the death.

Kent Police has appealed for witnesses and for anyone with information about the collision or the events immediately beforehand to come forward. Investigators have also requested CCTV and dashcam footage from the area.
