Eligible residents in Tunbridge Wells borough will receive a one-off £100 Household Energy Payment from January 2027, under plans announced by the UK Government as part of its budget.
Households living in properties rated council tax band A to D as their main residence are expected to receive the payment — the Government has confirmed it will be delivered through the council-tax system, though Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has yet to confirm its precise local process. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council posted news of the scheme on its official channels after the Government announced it as part of the budget, directing residents to read more about what it means locally.
The payment is meant to ease pressure on energy bills. Across England, the Government estimates more than 20 million households could receive it, covering around 83% of fuel-stressed households and 88% of those in the bottom three income groups by earnings.
But the scheme has a clear cut-off point. Households in bands E to H get nothing from the core payment — and council tax bands are a rough guide to property value, not a precise measure of who is struggling with fuel costs or income. A family in a band E home with high energy use could be left out entirely, while a wealthier household in a band D property would qualify.
Second homes and empty properties are excluded. Tenants and households where the resident isn’t directly liable for council tax may also find their eligibility is less straightforward, and the Government has yet to publish full guidance on how those cases will be handled.
The one-off nature of the payment draws further questions. At £100, it is unlikely to cover more than a fraction of a typical annual energy bill — so while it offers short-term help, it won’t stretch far for households facing sustained high costs through winter months.
According to the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, councils are expected to begin making payments from January 2027.
How smoothly the scheme works in practice will depend on how clearly councils communicate eligibility, how quickly payments reach residents, and whether any local discretionary arrangements are introduced for households whose circumstances don’t fit the standard criteria. None of those details have been confirmed for Tunbridge Wells yet.
