Weight-loss drug linked to hair loss risk, BMJ study finds

A new study published in The BMJ has found that GLP-1 drugs — the class that includes widely used weight-loss and diabetes medicines such as semaglutide — are associated with a higher risk of hair loss in adults with type 2 diabetes, though researchers say the absolute risk remains low.

The findings come from research published directly in The BMJ, which the journal shared on its official account. The study looked at adults with type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) drugs — medicines that mimic a gut hormone to control blood sugar and suppress appetite — and found a link with alopecia (hair loss) compared with people not taking the drugs.

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, which can range from thinning at the scalp to more noticeable patches. The BMJ study does not describe the hair loss as severe or permanent, and the journal’s own summary of the findings stresses that the absolute risk is low.

GLP-1 drugs have become some of the most talked-about medicines in the UK over the past few years, prescribed both for type 2 diabetes management and, increasingly, for weight loss. That wider use makes awareness of possible side effects more relevant for patients and the clinicians advising them.

So what does this mean in practice? The BMJ framed the findings as information to support shared decision-making between patients and their doctors — not as a reason to stop or avoid treatment.

Anyone already taking a GLP-1 drug who is concerned about hair loss should speak to their GP rather than stopping medication without advice. GPs can weigh up the benefits of the treatment against any side effects a patient is experiencing and discuss whether any changes are needed.
