Anthropic has opened applications for its first focused AI for Science grant call, giving selected researchers and biotech firms up to $50,000 in Claude usage credits over six months.
Anthropic, the AI safety company behind the Claude family of models, announced on 21 July 2026 that it is offering in-kind credits — not cash — to researchers and early-stage biotech companies working on rare genetic diseases. The credits, worth up to around £39,000 at current exchange rates, cover access to Claude Opus and other generally available models the company has approved for biology research.
The offer marks the first focused call under Anthropic’s broader AI for Science programme, which the company says is designed to help scientists use Claude to speed up discovery.
What Anthropic Is Actually Offering
The grant is structured as model access, not money. Accepted applicants get up to $50,000 worth of Claude usage credits over a six-month window, which they can put towards tasks such as literature review, data analysis, and research support in rare disease science.
That distinction matters. Teams that need laboratory equipment, clinical trial funding, or extra staff won’t find that here. What they get is compute time on Anthropic’s models — which, for data-heavy scientific work, can still represent a meaningful reduction in running costs.
Applications close on 2 August 2026 at 11:59 PM PST. Anthropic has not published a cap on the total number of awards.
Safety Filters and Exemptions
Biology research sits in sensitive territory for AI companies, and Anthropic is open about that. Some projects may trigger the company’s biological safety systems — filters designed to prevent misuse of AI in life-sciences contexts.
But Anthropic says that doesn’t automatically rule a project out. Teams whose work falls into that category can apply for an exemption, which will go through a separate review process. The company hasn’t published detailed criteria for what qualifies.

The AI for Science programme appears to be one practical expression of that ambition — starting with a disease category where patient populations are small, data is scarce, and the cost of traditional research is high relative to commercial return.
The Broader Picture
Rare diseases are, by definition, uncommon. But there are thousands of them, and collectively they affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Many have no approved treatment. Research in this space is often underfunded precisely because the patient numbers don’t make it commercially attractive for large pharmaceutical companies.
AI tools — chiefly large language models capable of processing vast bodies of scientific literature — have attracted interest as a way to accelerate the early stages of research without proportionate increases in cost. The idea is that a model like Claude Opus can help a small team cover ground that would otherwise require a much larger one.
Whether that translates into genuine clinical progress is still an open question. The technology is good at pattern recognition and synthesis. It’s less clear how much it can contribute beyond the desk-research phase of drug discovery.
Anthropic says it wants to build a research community around AI for Science, suggesting the credits are also partly about getting scientists working with Claude and feeding that experience back into how the company develops its models for scientific use.
And the credit-based model has a secondary effect: it keeps researchers inside Anthropic’s ecosystem rather than competitors like OpenAI or Google DeepMind, both of which are also pushing into scientific AI applications.
