Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, Its First-Ever Foldable iPhone, at September Event

Apple’s new iPhone Duo brings a book-style foldable design to the iPhone range for the first time, nearly two decades after the original iPhone launched.

Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo — its first foldable smartphone — at its annual autumn hardware event in Cupertino, California, on 9 September 2026. The launch marks the biggest change to the iPhone line since Steve Jobs first held up the original device in 2007.

The announcement came at the first keynote led by new Apple chief executive John Ternus, who also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the foldable newcomer.

What the iPhone Duo Actually Is

The Duo folds like a small book. Closed, it has an outer display of around 5.4 inches — roughly the size of a compact phone. Open it up and you get a Retina display of around 7.6 inches, putting it closer to a small tablet. Apple says users can run two apps side by side on the larger screen, making it useful for multitasking or watching video.

Under the hood sits Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, paired with a C2 modem — the latter designed entirely in-house by Apple. That modem is a pointed move away from Qualcomm, the US chip firm that has long supplied wireless data chips to the iPhone range. Apple has been working to bring modem design in-house for years, and the Duo is the clearest sign yet of how far that project has come.

The camera system uses two 48-megapixel sensors — a main fusion camera and an ultrawide — with 2x optical zoom on the ultrawide.

Price and Availability

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States — around £1,570 at current exchange rates, though Apple has not yet confirmed official UK pricing. That puts it well above the standard iPhone 18 range and makes it one of the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever sold.

Pre-orders open on 16 October 2026, with the device going on general sale from 23 October 2026. UK buyers will be able to order through Apple UK and major mobile operators, though exact tariffs and bundle details are yet to be confirmed for the British market.

Apple Arrives Late — But the Market Has Noticed

Apple is not first to the foldable party. Samsung has sold foldable phones under its Galaxy Z series for several years, and other manufacturers have followed. By the time the Duo ships in October, rivals will have had a head start of nearly half a decade.

But Apple’s entry changes the conversation. Analysts and industry watchers say the company’s arrival in the foldable market validates the category in a way that no other manufacturer’s launch has managed. When Apple moves, app developers tend to follow — and that could push the wider ecosystem of foldable-optimised software forward faster than it has moved so far.

Not everyone is convinced the timing is right, or the price fair. Some analysts have questioned whether folding displays and hinges can match the long-term durability of a standard glass-fronted phone, and whether the form factor justifies a premium that, in the UK, is likely to land well above £1,500. Repair costs for foldable screens, should something go wrong, are also a concern critics have raised.

The Chip Strategy Behind the Device

The C2 modem is worth a closer look. Apple has been accused by some in the industry of moving too slowly to cut its reliance on Qualcomm, but the C2 — following the earlier C1 modem introduced in the iPhone 17 range — shows the company is now moving quickly. Designing both the application processor and the modem in-house gives Apple tighter control over power efficiency and performance, something it has long had with its A-series chips but not with its wireless components.

Production of the Duo has been handled through Foxconn, with display panels supplied by Samsung Display — a reminder that even Apple’s most self-reliant products still depend on a global supply chain.

John Ternus, Apple’s chief executive, said: “iPhone Duo is the result of years of work to bring a new kind of iPhone to life — one that fits in your pocket and opens into something much more.”

A New Kind of iPhone for a Maturing Market

The foldable smartphone market has matured considerably since Samsung launched the first Galaxy Z Fold in 2019. Prices have come down, hinges have improved, and software has caught up. Apple’s entry at the top of the market — with a premium price and its own silicon — suggests the company sees the Duo as a halo product rather than a mass-market device, at least for now.

Whether the Duo finds a wide audience or remains a niche choice for power users and early adopters will become clearer once UK pricing lands and the first independent durability tests are published.

What This Means for Kent Residents

Kent residents who use Apple devices will have a new premium option when the Duo goes on sale in late October, with pre-orders available through Apple UK and major operators including EE, O2, Vodafone and Three — though UK handset prices and contract tariffs haven’t been confirmed yet. At around $1,999 in the US — likely to translate to well over £1,500 in the UK — the Duo will sit beyond the reach of many buyers, chiefly with cost-of-living pressures still biting. For commuters travelling into London who want a compact device that opens to a larger screen for work or media on the go, it may be worth watching closely once independent reviews and UK pricing are published.
