The quadruped robot Spot is being trialled to carry parcels from delivery vans to front doors, targeting the costly “porch gap” that slows drivers and strains their backs.
Picture a delivery driver pulling up outside a terraced house. Instead of hauling a stack of parcels up a garden path and a flight of steps, they stay at the wheel while a four-legged robot trots to the door, unloads the packages, and returns to the van ready for the next drop. That’s the scenario Boston Dynamics is now actively working towards with Spot, its well-known quadruped robot, in what the company is calling a last-mile delivery solution.
The announcement has drawn considerable attention online, with Boston Dynamics sharing footage and details of the project through its official channels.
The “Porch Gap” Problem
Last-mile delivery — the final leg of a parcel’s journey from a local depot or van to someone’s front door — is widely regarded as the most expensive and time-consuming stretch of the entire logistics chain. Short distances, frequent stops, awkward terrain, and the sheer physical grind of carrying boxes up kerbs, steps, and garden paths all add up. The industry has taken to calling the short stretch from vehicle to doorstep the “porch gap”, and it’s a deceptively stubborn problem.
Boston Dynamics is betting that Spot can help close it. The robot, originally built for industrial inspection work in factories and on construction sites, has been fitted with a prototype bin-style conveyor belt accessory mounted on its back. The rig lets Spot carry multiple parcels from the van and unload them gently at the door — no dropping, no throwing.
The configuration is designed to handle two parcels at a time, each roughly 16 by 12 by 10 inches. Boston Dynamics says that size range covers around 60% of the typical delivery van’s package mix, though that figure comes from the company’s own internal estimates rather than an independently verified logistics study.
Working With Drivers, Not Replacing Them
Boston Dynamics is emphatic on one point: Spot is not here to take anyone’s job. The model being proposed is collaborative. Drivers continue to manage vehicle operation, route decisions, and customer interaction. Spot handles the repetitive, physically punishing van-to-door trips — the ones that, done dozens of times a day, contribute to the musculoskeletal injuries that the Health and Safety Executive consistently flags as a leading cause of lost working time in transport and storage.
Paige Miller, Senior Staff Product Manager for Spot at Boston Dynamics, said: “For every three packages delivered via Spot, we think we can add another package to the van.”
That’s an internal projection based on modelling rather than published field data, but the logic is straightforward enough. If Spot is handling the doorstep runs, drivers spend less time off the vehicle, fatigue accumulates more slowly, and the van can be loaded more heavily from the start.
Early deployments are expected to involve the driver remotely controlling Spot, allowing Boston Dynamics to gather real-world data before the robot takes on more autonomous navigation. It’s a cautious, incremental approach — and probably the right one for a robot operating on public pavements around children, pets, and elderly residents.
What the Technology Can and Can’t Do
Spot has a genuine edge over wheeled delivery robots when it comes to terrain. Steps, kerbs, uneven garden paths, gravel drives — all things that stop a wheeled robot cold are, at least in principle, manageable for a legged machine. That’s a meaningful advantage in dense residential areas where the built environment is anything but flat and predictable.
Drones are another option carriers have explored, but aviation regulations add layers of complexity, and they can’t exactly handle a parcel that needs to be placed carefully on a doorstep. Spot sits in a different category.
The ambition, longer term, is striking. Boston Dynamics has floated a vision in which autonomous vehicles transport fleets of Spot robots to high-density delivery areas, where multiple robots support one or two human supervisors. That’s some way off. For now, the company’s stated goal is a pilot with a logistics partner in which Spot works alongside a driver to deliver around 200 packages per day, five days a week. That target hasn’t been achieved yet — it’s where they want to get to.
Boston Dynamics says it’s in discussions with major logistics companies, but hasn’t named any of them. No commercial contracts have been announced.
Questions the Industry Is Asking
Not everyone is straightforwardly enthusiastic. Logistics workers and their unions are likely to watch closely. Reduced physical strain is a genuine benefit — nobody should romanticise the wear on a driver’s body after years of manual handling. But questions about monitoring, quota pressure, and the longer-term shape of delivery work are legitimate ones, and they haven’t been fully addressed in Boston Dynamics’ public materials.
There are also broader public questions. How do residents feel about a robot dog trotting up their front path? What happens when it encounters a toddler, a territorial terrier, or a narrow gate? And what data do Spot’s cameras and sensors collect as it moves through residential streets? The Information Commissioner’s Office would have a clear interest in that last question, should deployments ever reach UK pavements at scale.
What This Means for Kent Residents
No parcel carrier operating in Kent — whether Royal Mail, DPD, Evri, Yodel, or Amazon UK — has announced any trial or partnership involving Spot’s last-mile delivery system, so any direct impact on Kent doorsteps remains firmly in the future. If the technology does progress to UK pilots, residents in areas with high parcel volumes or tricky access — hilly streets, long drives, dense estates — could eventually see robot-assisted deliveries, subject to partner decisions and regulatory sign-off from bodies including the Health and Safety Executive and the ICO. For now, the most relevant takeaway for anyone in the county who regularly receives parcels is that the industry is actively searching for ways to speed up and improve the van-to-door experience — and that the solutions being tested look rather different from anything that’s knocked on a Kent door before.
