England to Screen All Newborns for Muscle-Wasting Condition

England to Screen All Newborns for Muscle-Wasting Condition

The government has announced a national newborn screening programme for spinal muscular atrophy will roll out across the whole of England, ending a postcode lottery that campaigners said was leaving families behind.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness, often becoming life-threatening in infants when left undetected. The government’s announcement means every newborn in England — including babies born in Kent — will now be tested for it as part of routine screening, rather than through the more limited programme that was previously planned.

The decision follows pressure from campaigners who argued that earlier, restricted proposals were unfair. Their concern was straightforward: if only some babies were being tested, families in areas without access to the programme had no way of knowing their child was affected until symptoms appeared — by which point irreversible damage can already have occurred.

SMA affects the nerve cells (motor neurones) that control movement. Without early treatment, the condition can severely limit a child’s ability to breathe, swallow, and move. Catching it through newborn blood spot testing — the same heel-prick test already used to screen for conditions including cystic fibrosis — allows treatment to begin before symptoms develop, when it is most effective, according to NHS guidance.

Early treatment can make a profound difference. That’s the core argument campaigners have made for years, and the government’s announcement suggests it has been accepted.

The BMJ, which reported the announcement, did not publish a timeline for the full rollout or confirm the exact date the expanded programme begins. Kent residents with questions about newborn screening should speak to their midwife, health visitor, or GP, or call NHS 111 for guidance.

Key information

  • Newborn blood spot screening (the heel-prick test) is offered to all babies in England, usually when the baby is five days old
  • Parents with concerns about SMA or newborn screening should contact their midwife, health visitor, or GP
  • Call NHS 111 for general health queries or if you’re unsure whether your baby has been screened
