The Department of Health and Social Care has issued a formal alert warning that venlafaxine 75mg immediate-release tablets — one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in the UK — are likely to be unavailable until November 2026.
The shortage covers the 75mg immediate-release formulation of venlafaxine, a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used to treat depression, anxiety, and panic disorder. The Department of Health and Social Care classified the disruption as a tier 2 medium impact alert, meaning supplies are markedly disrupted but alternative options exist.
The BMJ flagged the alert on X, drawing attention to the official government warning.
Anyone currently taking this specific tablet should not stop their medication without speaking to a GP or pharmacist first. Stopping antidepressants suddenly can cause withdrawal effects — dizziness, nausea, and flu-like symptoms among them.
A pharmacist may be able to switch a patient to a different strength or a modified-release version of venlafaxine, or discuss an alternative with their prescribing GP. The shortage applies to the 75mg immediate-release tablet specifically, not necessarily to all venlafaxine products.
