A new study published in the BMJ concludes that exercise meaningfully slows the age-related thinning of bones in adults aged 40 and over.
Bone mineral density — the measure of how dense and strong bones are — naturally falls as people age, raising the risk of fractures and conditions such as osteoporosis. The BMJ study, shared by the journal’s official account, finds that exercise can actively reduce that decline in people aged 40 and over.
