Figure AI’s third-generation humanoid robot is now handling sequencing and logistics operations at BMW’s largest manufacturing facility in the world.

A short video posted to social media this week shows something that would have looked like science fiction not long ago: a humanoid robot moving through one of the world’s busiest car plants, organising parts and vehicles in the correct order for production. The robot is Figure AI’s F.03, and it’s now working at BMW’s Spartanburg facility in South Carolina — the German carmaker’s biggest plant by volume, producing hundreds of thousands of vehicles a year, including the BMW X3.

Figure AI, the US robotics company behind the machine, posted the announcement on its official account with the simple message: “F.03 has arrived at BMW.”

What Is the F.03 and What Makes It Different?

The F.03 is the latest generation of Figure AI’s general-purpose humanoid platform, and it comes with a handful of upgrades over earlier versions that matter quite a lot in a real factory environment. Wireless charging means the robot spends less time docked and more time working. Tactile sensors built into the hands give it a better feel for the objects it’s handling — useful when you’re dealing with precision automotive parts. Palm-mounted cameras add another layer of visual awareness for close-up manipulation tasks. And speech-to-speech audio lets workers communicate with the robot more naturally, even over the noise of a production floor.

That last one might sound like a gimmick. It isn’t. In a loud industrial setting, being able to speak directly to a machine and get a spoken response back is genuinely practical.

At Spartanburg, the F.03 is being used for what the industry calls “sequencing” — making sure parts or vehicles are arranged in the right order for assembly or outbound shipping. It’s repetitive, it’s physically demanding, and getting it wrong causes expensive delays. It’s exactly the kind of task manufacturers have wanted robots to handle for years.

BMW’s Spartanburg Plant and Its Automation History

BMW’s Spartanburg facility isn’t new to advanced automation. The plant has long been at the front of BMW’s push to integrate robotics into production, and it’s the kind of site where new technology gets a real-world test rather than a controlled laboratory run. Producing the X3 alongside other SUV and crossover models at that scale — hundreds of thousands of units annually — means any efficiency gain, however small, adds up quickly.

The deployment of F.03 fits into what the manufacturing industry broadly calls Industry 4.0: the shift towards digitally connected, highly automated production. BMW, like most major automotive original equipment manufacturers, has been working towards greater flexibility in its logistics operations for some time.

Scepticism Around the Demos

Not everyone is convinced by what they’ve seen so far. Online commentary around the F.03 announcement has raised questions about how much of what appears in promotional videos is fully autonomous and live, versus carefully staged or edited sequences. It’s a fair challenge. The gap between a polished demonstration video and a robot running reliably across an entire production shift, day after day, is considerable.

Brett Adcock, the founder and chief executive of Figure AI, has been vocal about the company’s ambitions, but the firm hasn’t published specific throughput figures or productivity data from the Spartanburg deployment. Without that, independent assessment of the F.03’s real-world performance remains difficult.

Robotics researchers generally view deployments like this as valuable precisely because they expose the gap between lab capability and factory reality. The technology is progressing. Whether it’s progressing as fast as the promotional material suggests is a separate question.

The Workforce Question

It would be odd to report on a humanoid robot taking on logistics tasks without mentioning what that means for the people currently doing those jobs. Worker representatives and trade unions have consistently raised concerns about automation in manufacturing, calling for proper consultation, retraining programmes, and assurances that productivity gains are shared with employees rather than simply extracted from headcount reductions.

BMW and similar manufacturers tend to frame deployments like this around safety and efficiency — removing workers from repetitive or physically punishing tasks rather than replacing them outright. That framing is contested, and the long-term picture across the industry remains genuinely uncertain.

What’s clear is that the conversation is no longer theoretical. The robot is on the floor.

What This Means for Kent Residents

There’s no confirmed deployment of Figure AI’s F.03 in Kent, and the Spartanburg plant is an ocean away.
