Kent County Council has launched WeRoam, a free six-month app pilot in Gravesend that gives residents aged 16 and over points and rewards for choosing to walk, wheel or cycle instead of taking the car.
Gravesend residents can download WeRoam for free and start earning rewards every time they walk to the shops, cycle to an appointment or wheel through town instead of driving. The app tracks activity, sends personalised prompts to keep users going, and lets people join or create local groups — walking-to-school runs, workplace cycling chats, that sort of thing. Kent County Council is running the pilot for six months, with backing from Gravesham Borough Council, Active Kent & Medway, One You Kent, Cyclopark, Explore Kent, the Gurdwara, local retailers, community groups and volunteers.
The target is short car journeys. The ones most of us barely register — nipping to the post office, driving two minutes to a GP appointment. KCC says WeRoam is “about making active travel easy, social and enjoyable”, with small daily changes adding up to real health benefits over time.
Anyone aged 16 or over living in Gravesend is eligible. The range of partners involved — from a Gurdwara to local retailers — suggests the scheme is deliberately trying to reach people who wouldn’t normally think of themselves as cyclists.
