Kent Fire and Rescue urges Diwali safety with candles and fireworks

Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued safety guidance for people celebrating Diwali this weekend, advising extra care around open flames, decorations and fireworks.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service posted the warning through its official social-media account ahead of Diwali festivities, urging celebrants to keep candles and diyas away from curtains and decorations, and to ensure all flames are fully extinguished before leaving a room.

The service advises that diyas and candles should rest on heat-resistant surfaces, and that only enough ghee should be used for a diya to last during Puja. Smoke alarms should be fitted on every floor and tested regularly.

On fireworks, the service states they must be lit at arm’s length using a taper, with people standing well back and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Fireworks must not be set off or thrown in streets or other public places, and the service advises against drinking alcohol while handling them.

Children must be supervised around fireworks at all times. Sparklers should not be given to children under five, and used sparklers should be placed in a bucket of water or sand and left to cool completely before disposal.

Fireworks are prohibited between 11pm and 7am on most nights, though the permitted cut-off extends to 1am on Diwali. Local restrictions may also apply, and the service advises checking with the relevant council. Anyone facing an immediate risk to life should call 999.
