A new partnership bringing together water companies, councils, environmental groups, farmers and businesses has held its first meeting to tackle growing pressure on Kent’s water supply.
Residents who’ve had their water cut off will want answers. Kent County Council convened the Kent Water Resilience Partnership this week, pulling together the organisations responsible for planning, managing, regulating and protecting the county’s supply — all in one room.
It follows a difficult run of supply interruptions across Kent. Delegates talked through the pressures behind those problems — ageing pipes, rising demand, population growth, a changing climate — and looked at where they could work together more effectively.
Councillor Linden Kemkaran said no single organisation could resolve Kent’s water challenges and that collaboration was needed to identify practical actions. Jamie Henderson, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal Regeneration, made the point that supply reliability is a public health issue — hospitals, care homes, schools and community services all depend on it, and it’s vulnerable residents who feel the pinch hardest when things go wrong.
So what did the water companies actually commit to? South East Water outlined a target to repair visible leaks within five days of being reported, along with more detection and repair teams and stronger incident-management arrangements. Southern Water pointed to planned investment in Kent’s treatment works, covering water quality, resilience and maintenance.
Before the meeting, Kent County Council ran a Facebook poll drawing more than 2,500 votes. Reducing leaks and investing in repairs came out as the strongest priorities. Those results were shared with delegates and helped inform discussions throughout the day.
Partners agreed to consider next steps for continuing the partnership’s work, including potential collaboration on water storage and infrastructure investment, better data sharing and clearer public communication.
