Man charged with causing death by dangerous driving after two cyclists killed in Cobham

Kent Police announced the charge via the force’s Gravesend neighbourhood policing account on social media. The collision occurred at around 7.47am on Sole Street in Cobham, involving a white Ford Focus travelling south west towards Meopham and three cyclists. Two of those cyclists — a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s — were pronounced dead at the scene. A third cyclist was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the collision. A 19-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Kent Police subsequently confirmed that at least one man has since been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Sole Street was closed after the collision to allow officers from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit to carry out a forensic examination of the scene.

Kent Police appealed for witnesses and for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage relating to the collision, or to the movements of the white Ford Focus or the cyclists beforehand, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Causing death by dangerous driving is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988. For offences committed after 28 June 2022, the maximum sentence is life imprisonment, with mandatory disqualification also applicable.
