Medway Mile 2026: Free Community Race Returns to Gillingham on 17 July

The former Medway Council Civic Centre in Strood

Medway Park opens its doors for a free evening of racing, children’s events and live entertainment — and there’s just one week to go.

One Week and Counting

The Medway Mile is back. On Friday 17 July 2026, Medway Park in Gillingham throws open its gates for one of the biggest community sporting evenings the area puts on — and it won’t cost you a penny.

Running from 5pm to 9pm, the evening packs in children’s races, competitive club relays, a mascot dash, elite track miles and the headline Mass Medway Mile itself. Runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities are welcome. No experience required.

What’s On

The evening is built around a full programme of activity. Family-friendly activities and children’s races get things going on the athletics track, followed by a mascot race. Competitive adult and elite track mile races follow before the main event — the Mass Medway Mile at 8pm sharp. Food vendors and activities are scheduled to run until 9pm.

Who’s Behind It

Medway Council organises the event through its Medway Sport team. The council says the Medway Mile brings together thousands of people every summer to get active, try something new and take part as a community. Which, given the weather Kent usually serves up in July, is either optimistic or admirable — probably both.

The event forms part of what Medway Council is calling a “summer of sport” in Medway.

Free to Enter — Here’s How to Sign Up

Entry to the Mass Medway Mile is free. Details on how to register and get involved are available through Medway Sport and Medway Council’s official channels.

The venue is Medway Park, Gillingham.

What This Means for Kent Residents

For families and individuals across Medway and the wider Kent area, this is a genuinely rare thing — a properly organised athletics event you can turn up to without paying for the privilege. Free entry removes the barrier that puts a lot of people off competitive sport, and you can walk the mile just as easily as run it. Children’s races, live entertainment and food vendors all on site mean it’s built as a full evening out rather than just a race. If you’ve been looking for a reason to get off the sofa this summer, 17 July at Medway Park is a pretty solid answer.
