Work has begun on creating small urban green spaces on highway land in Maidstone town centre, with sites at Brewer Street, Union Street and the junction of Union Street with Week Street included in the scheme.
Three patches of highway land in central Maidstone are being transformed into pocket parks, covering sites at Brewer Street, Union Street and the junction of Union Street with Week Street. A planning application has been submitted to Maidstone Borough Council in connection with the works.
Pocket parks are small green areas created within built-up streets — typically on bits of land alongside roads that would otherwise remain paved over. These three sites sit on some of the town’s busiest central routes.
The scheme forms part of a broader pattern of greening work under way in Maidstone town centre.
What the finished parks will look like has not yet been confirmed publicly. No final design details have been set out at this stage, and it is not yet clear whether features such as seating or planting will be included, or what effects the works may have on traffic or access to nearby businesses.
Maidstone Borough Council is the decision-making authority for the planning application.
