The Chinese robotics firm says its bipedal humanoid output has hit 18,000 units, but insists the figure excludes wheeled platforms and other robot types.
Unitree Robotics has announced that its cumulative production of bionic bipedal humanoid robots has reached around 18,000 units. The Chinese company posted the figure publicly, drawing attention to how it counts its machines — and how it doesn’t.
The announcement matters because it places Unitree among the highest-volume humanoid robot makers in the world, at a moment when the global market for such machines is expanding fast.
What Unitree Is Actually Counting
Unitree was careful to define the figure. The 18,000 units covers only what the company calls its bionic bipedal humanoid robots — machines that walk on two legs. It does not include dual-arm wheeled robots or other robot types in Unitree’s range.
That distinction is deliberate. The company has repeatedly pushed back against comparisons that mix bipedal and wheeled humanoid platforms together, arguing the categories shouldn’t be lumped into a single headline number.
Unitree has previously said its 2025 humanoid robot shipments exceeded 5,500 units, and that its 2025 mass-production output exceeded 6,500 units. Again, those figures covered only pure humanoid robots — the wheeled variants were excluded.
The G1’s Rise
Secondary reporting, citing official data, suggests Unitree’s G1 model — its flagship bipedal humanoid — had reached around 11,000 cumulative units by May 2026. That would mean roughly 7,000 additional units were produced between May and August of this year alone.
That’s a sharp ramp-up.
Reports also suggest Unitree shipped around 5,900 units in the first half of 2026. One report attributed 31% of the global humanoid robot market to the company for that period, though that figure could not be independently verified against an official dataset, so it should be treated with caution.
A Market Growing Fast — But Hard to Measure
The broader humanoid robot market is clearly expanding, but the exact size depends on who you ask. IDC has been cited in some reports as estimating around 18,000 global humanoid robot shipments for the whole of 2025. Other research firms put the figure lower, with estimates ranging from roughly 13,000 to 18,000 units across the available reporting. Omdia and others have published their own projections, and the numbers don’t always line up.
That inconsistency matters when evaluating Unitree’s market-share claims. If the baseline total shifts depending on the research firm, so does any percentage derived from it.
What’s not in dispute is that Unitree has scaled production quickly. The company started as a maker of quadruped robots — the dog-like machines that became familiar in research labs and at tech demonstrations — before moving into bipedal humanoids with the G1 and related platforms.
What the Company Says
Unitree’s public statements have been consistent on one point: context matters when reading production figures. The January 2026 clarification — issued after online debate about the company’s 2025 sales numbers — spelled out that pure humanoid robots and wheeled humanoid platforms are different products and shouldn’t be directly compared.
That’s not an unreasonable position. A wheeled robot and a bipedal humanoid have different engineering challenges, different use cases, and different price points. Mixing them in a single count can obscure more than it reveals.
But it also means that anyone trying to benchmark Unitree against competitors needs to be sure they’re comparing like with like — and that’s harder than it sounds in a market where definitions aren’t yet standardised.
Analysts and commercial buyers watching the humanoid space will likely welcome more clarity. Universities, research groups, and companies evaluating humanoid robots for logistics, manufacturing, or research roles are already working through a crowded field of competing claims from multiple vendors.
Price and Accessibility
Unitree has positioned itself at the more accessible end of the humanoid robot market. The G1 has been listed at prices considerably below those of some Western competitors — a factor that has drawn attention from researchers and smaller commercial operators who can’t justify six-figure spending on a single unit.
Whether that pricing holds as production scales, and whether quality keeps pace with volume, are questions the market will answer over the coming months.
Competitors including Figure, Agility Robotics, and Boston Dynamics are all pushing their own humanoid programmes forward. The race isn’t over. But Unitree’s production numbers, if accurate, suggest it has built a meaningful lead in units shipped.
