George Russell claimed victory at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on 28 June 2026, converting pole position into a commanding race win to take his second victory of the season. Max Verstappen crossed the line in second place, 1.611 seconds adrift, having started from fifth on the grid. Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third for Mercedes, finishing 1.986 seconds behind his team-mate and setting the fastest lap of the race in the process.
Verstappen’s charge from fifth to second represented one of the more notable drives of the afternoon, recovering four positions across the course of the race to mount a late challenge on Russell. Antonelli, starting fourth, also moved forward to secure third, adding the bonus point for fastest lap to his tally. Charles Leclerc endured a difficult afternoon, slipping from second on the grid to eighth at the flag — a loss of six positions — while Lewis Hamilton, who had qualified third, fell to fifth by the conclusion of the race. Oscar Piastri advanced three places from seventh on the grid to fourth, with Isack Hadjar also gaining two positions from eighth to sixth for Red Bull.
George Russell’s victory was the standout result among the British contingent in the top ten. Starting from pole position, the Mercedes driver led throughout to record a controlled and measured win, his second of the 2026 campaign. Lando Norris finished seventh for McLaren, having started sixth, whilst Arvid Lindblad rounded out the points in tenth place for the RB F1 Team, matching his grid position. Hamilton’s fifth-place finish, despite dropping two places from his qualifying position, nonetheless secured ten valuable championship points for Ferrari.
In the Drivers’ Championship, Andrea Kimi Antonelli retains the lead on 171 points following his podium finish, though George Russell’s victory has closed the gap somewhat, with the Mercedes team-mates now separated by 40 points. Lewis Hamilton remains third on 125 points, keeping Ferrari’s challenge alive. In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes have extended their advantage at the summit to 302 points, with Ferrari second on 204 points and McLaren third on 159 points. Red Bull, boosted by Verstappen’s second place and Hadjar’s sixth, move to 115 points in fourth, though they remain some distance from the leading trio as the season approaches its midpoint.
