Elon Musk’s SpaceX announces a second Starbase campus in Louisiana, targeting over 30 Starship launches per day from 2029 onwards.

The Gulf Coast of Louisiana is about to become the most ambitious launch site on Earth — if SpaceX gets its way. The company has announced plans for a vast new Starship spaceport in Vermilion Parish, near Pecan Island, with an eye-watering investment of around $100 billion (roughly £79 billion) and aspirations to eventually send thousands of rockets into orbit every single year.

At the same time, the announcement, made on 25 August 2026 by SpaceX alongside Louisiana state officials, describes the project as a second Starbase campus — complementing the existing Starbase site at Boca Chica in South Texas, which currently handles Starship test flights. The Louisiana site is designed for something far more ambitious: high-cadence, operational launches at a scale the space industry has never attempted before.

A Spaceport Unlike Anything Built Before

The numbers are hard to wrap your head around. Starbase, Louisiana is planned to cover about 125,000 acres — roughly 506 square kilometres — of former industrial land on the Gulf Coast. SpaceX says the site will eventually host over a dozen launch towers, with a stated operational capacity of more than 30 Starship flights per day once fully developed. Elon Musk has described it as “the biggest launch site on Earth.”

That’s not a modest claim. For context, the busiest launch sites currently operating anywhere in the world manage a few dozen flights per year. SpaceX is talking about that many before breakfast.

Construction is targeted to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch from the Louisiana site aimed for 2029, subject to engineering progress and regulatory approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration. The longer-term ambition — post-2030 — is for thousands of flights per year from the site alone, feeding into Musk’s stated global target of more than 10,000 Starship launches annually. That figure remains aspirational and depends on technological success, market demand, and a regulatory environment that keeps pace with the company’s plans.

Why Louisiana, and Why Now?

SpaceX’s existing Boca Chica site has served its purpose for development and testing, but it comes with constraints. The surrounding environment, nearby communities, and a demanding US regulatory process have all placed limits on how frequently and how quickly SpaceX can launch from Texas. Louisiana, with its industrial coastline and state government eager to attract large-scale investment, offers a different proposition.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has been vocal in his support, framing Starbase, Louisiana as a once-in-a-generation economic development project for Vermilion Parish and the wider state. The multi-decade construction and operational phases are expected to bring significant job creation, though specific employment figures haven’t been consistently confirmed across official sources.

Starship itself is SpaceX’s fully reusable, heavy-lift launch system, built to replace or largely supersede the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets for satellite launches, crewed missions, and deep-space cargo. The Louisiana site is intended to support missions to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond — including continued support for NASA’s Artemis lunar programme and the ongoing deployment of Starlink satellites.

Not Everyone Is Convinced

The project does face genuine questions. Environmental groups and some local residents are expected to raise concerns about the impact on Gulf Coast wetlands and wildlife, as well as noise, light pollution, and the risk of debris at very high launch frequencies. The site’s coastal location also raises longer-term questions about vulnerability to sea-level rise and extreme weather — a real consideration on the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Some economists and space policy commentators have also questioned whether the $100 billion investment figure and the thousands-of-launches-per-year projections are realistic, or whether they carry a degree of over-optimistic forecasting that has sometimes characterised large-scale SpaceX announcements in the past. The company has a strong track record of eventually delivering on ambitious goals, but timelines have often stretched.

Laura Forczyk, a space industry analyst at Astralytical, said: “SpaceX has consistently pushed the boundaries of what the launch industry thought was possible, but regulatory and environmental hurdles at this scale are genuinely uncharted territory.”

The FAA will have a central role in determining how quickly operations can ramp up, with safety, environmental impact, and airspace management all requiring careful review before any high-cadence launch regime gets under way.

A New Era for Commercial Space

What SpaceX is describing at Starbase, Louisiana fits into a much broader shift in the global space industry. Reusable rockets, mega-constellations like Starlink, and the emergence of privately led spaceports across the US, UK, and elsewhere are all reshaping who launches what, how often, and at what cost. A fully operational Starbase, Louisiana would heavily increase global launch capacity and, in theory, drive down the cost of getting payloads to orbit.

The UK’s own space sector — which generated around £17.5 billion in income and supported over 47,000 direct jobs in the most recent official figures — is watching developments like this closely. UK companies, universities, and research institutions already work with SpaceX and other international launch providers, and expanded capacity at a site like Starbase, Louisiana could open new options for getting British payloads into orbit.

What This Means for Kent Residents

For most people in Kent, the direct impact of Starbase, Louisiana will be felt through technology rather than geography. If SpaceX achieves anything close to its high-cadence launch ambitions, the knock-on effect could be faster expansion of Starlink satellite broadband — potentially useful for rural parts of Kent where fixed-line connectivity remains patchy. UK satellite operators, research groups, and tech firms working in space-related fields may also find it easier and cheaper to launch payloads via Starship once the Louisiana site is operational, though any UK payload would still require licensing through the UK Space Agency and compliance with national export controls.
