Elon Musk has announced plans for a vast new spaceport in Louisiana that SpaceX says will eventually host over a dozen launch towers and fire more than 30 Starship rockets into space every single day.
It sounds like something from a science fiction film. But on 25 August 2026, Elon Musk posted on X that SpaceX intends to build what it’s calling the biggest launch site on Earth — and he wasn’t understating the ambition.
The announcement came via Musk’s verified account, where he wrote that Starbase Louisiana will have the capacity to change the pace of human spaceflight entirely.
“Starbase Louisiana will ultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day and making it the biggest launch site on Earth!” Musk posted. “SpaceX makes sci‑fi real.”
Thirty flights a day. That’s roughly 11,000 launches a year from a single facility — a number that dwarfs the entire current global total of orbital launches, which runs to several hundred per year across all countries and companies combined.
What Is Starbase Louisiana?
SpaceX has announced plans to build the new complex on around 125,000 acres — about 50,600 hectares — of coastal land near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, along Louisiana’s Gulf Coast. The site sits on former industrial land, chosen after what SpaceX describes as a multi-year search for the right geography, coastal access, and regulatory conditions.
The projected investment is around £73 billion (roughly $100 billion), according to Louisiana state economic development statements and coverage from major financial news outlets. That would make it one of the largest single infrastructure investments in US history.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027. SpaceX and Louisiana state officials say the first Starship launches from the site are planned for no earlier than 2029.
The initial build-out will include around 10 Starship launch pads, with the longer-term plan to expand to more than a dozen towers. SpaceX describes the facility as designed to support thousands of Starship flights a year, serving Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Those are aspirational targets, not figures that have been demonstrated anywhere in the world yet.
Louisiana’s Big Bet
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and the state’s economic development authorities have publicly backed the project, presenting it as a flagship investment for the state. Officials have pointed to long-term job creation, supply-chain development, and the prospect of Louisiana becoming a global hub for commercial spaceflight.
SpaceX already operates major Starship infrastructure at Starbase in Texas, near Boca Chica, as well as launch facilities in Florida. Starbase Louisiana would be an additional site focused specifically on very high launch frequency — the kind of cadence SpaceX says it needs to make rocket launches as routine as aeroplane travel.
The company has also signalled that once Starship is flying reliably at scale, it intends to shift engineering and production resources away from its Falcon rocket family, suggesting the older workhorse could gradually be wound down.
The Questions Being Asked
Not everyone is convinced the numbers stack up. Some analysts question the technical and logistical feasibility of more than 30 launches per day from a single site, pointing to real-world constraints around turnaround times, safety margins, and the closure of airspace and sea space around each launch window.
Environmental groups and local residents in Vermilion Parish have raised concerns about building a facility of this scale on coastal marshland. The site includes wetlands, fisheries, and habitats that federal and state regulators will need to assess carefully before construction can begin. Noise, emissions, coastal erosion, and water quality are all on the table.
Some critics have also flagged the broader strategic question of concentrating so much of the world’s launch capacity — and, by extension, global communications infrastructure — in the hands of a single private company.
It’s worth being clear: the “biggest launch site on Earth” claim is forward-looking. No operational facility anywhere currently comes close to this level of activity. Starship itself remains in the test and early-development phase as of August 2026, and the daily launch rates described for Starbase Louisiana have not been demonstrated anywhere.
But SpaceX has a track record of doing things that looked implausible on paper. The Falcon 9 booster landings were widely doubted before they became routine. Whether Starship follows the same trajectory is uncertain.
What Comes Next
Construction is still more than a year away, and first launches are at least three years out. Between now and then, SpaceX faces environmental reviews, federal regulatory approvals, and the ongoing task of proving Starship reliable enough to fly at the cadence the company is describing.
The scale of the ambition is clear. Whether the reality matches it will take years to know.
